Lou Xiang and One with Cat
Exhibition: 'Recent Works'
2nd - 25th June, 2006
A contemporary extension of Lou Xiang’s mastery of calligraphy
is apparent in this collection of vibrant abstracts and playful
figurative works equating to over forty canvasses of varying scale.
A fresh and exciting movement is created with his deliberate and
minimal calligraphic stroke, with an underlying belief that a
painting should possess both soul and humour. An oriental style
informed by a background in ink brushwork manifests in a Western
expression of composition producing Xiang’s unique style, where he
takes the emphasis on brushwork to a new level by discarding it to
show an even closer sense of touch through hand-applied acrylics.
The Shanghai born artists light-heartedly explores the human
relationship with animals and plays with forms of smiling faces,
promising to uplift and inspire his audience.
